To support the Christian Science movement, I have been praying about the missions of its periodicals. In The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, Mrs. Eddy speaks of the names and purposes of the periodicals that she founded. She writes: "I have given the name to all the Christian Science periodicals. The first was The Christian Science Journal, designed to put on record the divine Science of Truth; the second I entitled Sentinel, intended to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love; the third, Der Herold der Christian Science, to proclaim the universal activity and availability of Truth; the next I named Monitor, to spread undivided the Science that operates unspent." Miscellany, p. 353 I've discovered that in prayerfully supporting these missions, I am actually praying to bless the whole world, not just to bless a movement or its own periodicals.
My wife and I have given away subscriptions to the Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Christian Science Monitor. For example, we take two Journal subscriptions and have done fairly well in meeting our goal of sharing one of the two copies with a new reader each month. My favorite experience of sharing this magazine happened on an airplane. I was reading the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly when the woman next to me asked, "What is Christian Science?" After a friendly discussion, I gave her my latest Journal, which she read for a while. She then expressed her delight in finding such a wonderful magazine and exclaimed that it was needed on the newsstands.
Once again, my prayers have led me to a greater understanding of the fact that success for the Christian Science movement is a consequence of its members' love for mankind.
