In my junior year, in a high school baseball game, I was hit directly in the mouth by a pitched ball. The damage to my mouth was considerable. My mother was so confident of man's perfection that she viewed the situation as an example of the adage that "man's extremity is God's opportunity." And since our family problems had always been treated through Christian Science, I also looked on the injury as a temporary inconvenience that would be healed through prayer.
The coach called the following day to ask if I was well enough to be at practice. I was, and without hesitation my mother told him I would be there. It was only a matter of days before the healing was complete.
As an adult I felt God's protection when, during our country's preparation for the Second World War, I was drafted into the Army. The harmonious way things worked out during my military service was all in God's own way. I had with me a copy of the Bible and of Science and Health, and I read them regularly.
