Enriching parental affection

Grace in parenting is a steady expression of God's love.

From the January 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some Years Ago I read an article in which a popular rock star told of his troubled youth. He had a hard time relating to his parents, but mentioned that the one thing he could never fight with was their love.

Despite a myriad of problems during his teens, years that were punctuated by alcohol and drug abuse, the love that was always there for him is what he most remembered. He credited that constancy of affection for keeping him going and eventually helping him find his way into a successful career.

Love is like that. Real, unequivocal, spiritual love comes from the Almighty, whose love is invariable, impartial, all-encompassing, never depleted. The parenting that most purely reflects divine Love can withstand all the onslaughts of human life and still keep loving. That's because it is not of ourselves but of God.
