From the January 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Beginning Of A New Year is a time when we naturally reflect a bit on development in our own lives, in the world, and in causes we hold dear. And not only do we look back on what has occurred, but we look forward to progressive development in the days to come. One meaning of develop is to unfold in greater detail what already exists.

Development is God's activity, and as editors, we've been praying to see that our significant part is to be willing and obedient to follow what only the divine hand can outline. In the 117th year of the Journal, we're continuing to listen for what God is unfolding. The issue you're reading today is the result of that listening so far. We hope you find that the new design enhances the vitality of the spiritual ideas that have always made up the substance of this magazine.

To help you feel at home, we invite you to spend a little time perusing the expanded table of contents. We've tried to make it a helpful guide to the variety of features included this month. As always, we deeply appreciate the role each one of our contributors and readers plays in the Journal's development. This issue comes with our thanks and love, and best wishes for a happy, Spirit-filled new year.
