When I was a little girl my mother was an invalid. A neighbor gave her a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and she was healed and lived a full and joyously active life. I attended a Christian Science Sunday School after that, and I remember using the truths I learned in Sunday School to heal myself of hay fever.
My parents gave me art lessons, and I continued to study with some of the finest professors of art at a university. Science and Health expresses this truth: "The artist is not in his painting. The picture is the artist's thought objectified" (p. 310). And elsewhere in the same book I read, "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul (p. 269). So in my painting and sculpture I try to project beauty, laughter, joy, harmony.
At one point, I had been studying the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy, and I noticed that one By-Law points out that God "supplies within the wide channels of The Mother Church dutiful and sufficient occupation for all its members" (Art. VIII, Sect. 15). As I prayed to see how this applied to me, I was delighted by the opportunity to have a number of my sketches published in The Christian Science Monitor.
