Christian Science has blessed my life since childhood. This healing truth was introduced to my family by an uncle who had been healed of the smoking and drinking habits. He wrote to my mother, telling her that she too could be healed of rheumatism and the effects of an automobile accident that had made it difficult for her to care for her family of three small children. Shortly thereafter, she requested treatment from a Christian Science practitioner after attending a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and was soon completely healed. I was quite young when her healing took place, but remembered many healings in our family in the years that followed. Two that I experienced in those early years were a healing of laryngitis and of what appeared to be ptomaine poisoning. I still remember the joy and gratitude I felt when my voice returned after many hours of reading testimonies from copies of the Christian Science Sentinel, in time to lead the singing at a school program that evening. In the second instance, I was so ill that a Christian Science practitioner was called to our home, and I remember the peace and joy I felt upon awakening, soon after his arrival, completely free of all pain and nausea.
One of the greatest blessings I owe to Christian Science is a happy, long-standing marriage. My husband knew nothing of this religion when we were married (except that we relied on prayer for healing), but he never objected to my use of this healing method in rearing our four children. He has long since joined me in active church membership.
When my son was several days old, I learned that he wasn't retaining food. We were reminded by the practitioner who had treated me throughout the pregnancy that, as Science and Health with Key to Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy assures us, "The divine Mind that made man maintains His own image and likeness" (p. 151). By the time we were released from the hospital, he was healed and had regained all the weight lost.
