EXPECTATIONS

Look for the best

Only God can help us discern what is true of ourselves and others.

From the September 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever heard someone say, "Look for the best in people"? There is a perspective to that idea that is more than philosophical. Looking for the best in someone can be a form of prayer, especially when we're regarding that person from a spiritual standpoint.

To behold someone as God's spiritual, perfect, loving expression, may take some effort, especially when that person is acting otherwise. Yet in order truly to see the best in someone, we've first got to discern God's pure spiritual reflection, who is always inseparable from the goodness of God.

Only God can help us to discern the spiritual reality. We need to close our eyes to material personality and look spiritually, mentally, prayerfully to God. Coming to know Him as perfect divine Mind, Love, and Truth, is vital to understanding ourselves and others as His image. As we gain a higher standpoint through prayer, we find freedom. Freedom from domination, resentment, hatred—the very things that appear to shackle joy and progress.
