Testimonies of Healing

God's protecting power

From the September 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through the study of Christian Science, I have come to know God not only as a healing presence in my life, but also as a saving and protecting power. Many times a thought or an idea has come to me just at a time or in a situation when it would keep me from harm. I am learning to recognize that these saving ideas are God's angels, or messages. In the Glossary of Science and Health, angels are described as, "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality" (p. 581).

I felt a nearness
to God,
and no fear.

Recently, I recognized one of God's angels. It came to me in the form of a sentence from Science and Health that became my constant companion over a period of several weeks. Although I had read the sentence numerous times before, it at once became infused with a light that would not be diminished. So I pondered it, prayed with it, and kept it very close for many days. It reads, "The history of Christianity furnishes sublime proofs of the supporting influence and protecting power bestowed on man by his heavenly Father, omnipotent Mind, who gives man faith and understanding whereby to defend himself, not only from temptation, but from bodily suffering" (p. 387). During the time that I was considering this statement, I had two experiences that illustrated its validity and practicality.
