Poems

Heaven

From the September 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I saw this road ahead of me
A goal to reach
An outlook to claim.
And if somehow, I could
Forget a temper's breach
Forgiving those
I will not name . . .
Would then somehow
My earthly pathway lead
To heaven's gate
And paradise?

He'd told us, "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. "
At hand? Heaven?
Not somewhere off
In glory land?

Then could I be in heaven, now?
A current state of understanding God?

But how?
And then, I learned that to repent
Meant to regret; to change one's view
Of God, myself, mankind, and you.

Right then, right there, I saw
That heaven is not a place to ponder
up in the clouds away off yonder—

Not in a future place to be
Because it's here and now
Within each one—reality.
