Christian Science has been central to my everyday life since infancy. Just how central I learned only recently.
To acquire a residence card in my new country, I was required to have a medical certificate, including a chest X-ray. This seemed no more than a formality. But, lo and behold, the X-ray showed a large abnormality in the area of my lungs. I was referred to a clinic, where I was told that I must be tested for several possibilities before a medical certificate could be issued.
At once I asked for treatment from a Christian Science practitioner and started to study with renewed application the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I saw that I must first lift the dark illusion of impending death, of the mortality decreed for humankind by mortal mind. "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death," as Paul wrote to the Corinthians (I Cor. 15:26). But God, and man and woman in His image and likeness, have no enemy, for there can be nothing opposed to God, good, to Life, reflected in the immortal life promised by Christ Jesus to all who believe in Christ. Death, then, is no more than a myth, told by mortal mind and destined to be exposed as false to all humanity. I began to explore the concept that death was a myth with great interest.
