When bribery is the norm

Some people believe they have to compromise conscience in order to be successful in business. Yet I've found it quite beneficial to express honesty in my business dealings, and to expect to receive the same kind of treatment in return.

Several years ago I needed to increase my company's capital. Since it was a joint venture company in India with foreign holdings, my partner and I needed the government's approval, and we needed the approval before the end of the fiscal year, which was about two weeks away. My colleagues and friends advised me that I should be prepared to pay a high price for getting the approval, especially since time was short.
