Chronology of the Church's founding

From the August 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Experiencing this revolution in thought, people begin to be healed by reading Science and Health. Also, some come together to read with each other and to talk about what they are learning. In 1879, a little band of people form the first church services in the Church of Christ, Scientist.

Earlier this afternoon, we heard about people today who are experiencing healings from reading Science and Health. But seekers don't stop there. They ask question about how to heal. They did then and they do now. So how does Mrs. Eddy respond?

In 1881, six years after publishing her book, she opens the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, where people can come to learn how to heal—based on the system in Science and Health. Now people have questions, and they write to the author, her college, or her Church. With so many questions, there is a need for a vehicle that can answer them more broadly. So she launches The Christian Science Journal in 1883. Again, we see her responding. As she says, the Journal is from the Christian Scientists to the world.
