History at a glance

From the September 2002 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At first, the opening decade of the 20th century seems like a time of turmoil and war. But behind these events, there are hints of a larger international vision emerging. It took form first as the League of Nations, which was plagued with problems. Despite this failure, it did forward the idea of nations working together. As time has passed, that idea has developed on many levels, including those expressed by the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Association of South East Asian Nations, the Organization of American States, and others.

1910

• China abolishes slavery.
• Japan takes over Korea.
• Portugal becomes a republic.
