One day last October, while grocery shopping after work, I suddenly lost most of the sight in my left eye. At first I was tempted to question why this had happened: "Where did this come from?" "Why was it so sudden?" Then the thought came, "Don't try to answer these questions. Don't accept this. Instead, focus on the spiritual truths that can heal the problem."
During my walk home from the store, I mentally stayed with the idea that I did not have to accept this situation. I thought of a line from the Lord's Prayer: "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven" (Matt. 6:10). Mary Baker Eddy's spiritual interpretation of this line states, "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme" (Science and Health, p. 17). When praying with this line, I often add attributes and synonyms for God. That evening I prayed, "God, good, is omnipotent, supreme. God, Life, is omnipotent, supreme." I knew that I was and always had been the manifestation of this omnipotent Life, which is only good and doesn't know decomposition or loss of any kind.
I focused on God.
