Eat what is set before you

From the October 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It was a frightening situation. My daughter, a college student, had stopped eating. Completely. It was unfathomable to me that she could go on like this—taking in only water, day after day. My desire to help was strong, and my desire to trust her ability to work this out through prayer, as she had customarily done, was also strong. But I'd never faced anything like this before. The problem was right in front of me, but appeared to be just beyond my reach.

Months before I became aware of this, I had run across a verse in the Bible that particularly caught my attention. I'd sensed that it had something important to teach me. The verse is in Luke, from a chapter in which Jesus is addressing his disciples. He says, "And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you." Luke 10:8.

I turned to God for inspiration and to understand what I should do.
