The promise of fullness

From the October 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.—Matthew 5:6

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.—Psalms 23:3

Oh never to feel empty again,
nor grieve for opportunities lost.
This is the promise of fullness
for pursuing the righteous cause.

To be vacuous is dangerous,
for such would be a suction
pulling in accident, sickness, sin,
or whatever leads to destruction.

But hungering for righteousness,
we are fed with bread from above.
And yearning yields to acknowledging
our present capacity to love.

The Master said to look to him
and find living waters within,
which assuage the unquenchable thirst
for disappointing things of earth.

No room within for a mistake
or pangs of self-disappointment
for, we are told, God leads His name's sake
in paths of righteous fulfillment.

The reward for seeking righteousness
is to live on earth as in heaven,
with blessings so full they overflow
into others' lives and heal them.
