Experiencing the 'click' of recognition that God is here

From the November 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The God of Old: Inside the Lost World of the Bible By 271 pp. New York: The Free Press $25 (hc).

What would god be like if seen through the eyes of the people who first wrote down the oldest stories in the Bible? Would the God that emerges from these earliest Hebrew texts be the same God that you and I "see" today?

In his new book, The God of Old: Inside the Lost World of the Bible, Harvard professor James L. Kugel time travels back some 3,000 years to find out. What he discovers is surprising, perhaps controversial, but ultimately instructive. Prof. Kugel suggests that the original meaning of wellknown Old Testament stories has fresh, modern relevance. Understanding the ancient Israelites' perception of the Supreme Being can heighten awarreness of divine activity here and now.
