Asking in his name

From the November 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Whenever Pastor Billy Ray prays the blessing at the soup kitchen at Second Baptist Church in Evanston, Illinois, he says solemnly at the end, "and we ask these things in Jesus' name, and together we say Amen." He sets it up so that everybody joins in a hearty "amen," but it's more than just a good way to finish up the grace. Pastor Billy Ray's own life has shown him that it takes the redeeming power of Christ to lift people out of the problems that have brought them to a life on the street.

So it is with any chronic or long-term physical ailment. Spiritual healing is something more than training oneself to think the right thoughts. Christian healing says, I want this prayer to bring my life and thoughts into line with the reality of Christ's saving power. The Christ saves by revealing each individual's oneness with God, Spirit. Through Christ's tender leading, this knowledge of being embraced in God's love becomes more real than the circumstance at hand. Spiritual healing loosens the limiting bonds of the human mind and shows people that it is possible to "let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Phil 2:5. Thoughts that are filled with the spirit of Christ are ones that are filled with love and healing.
