When at university in South Africa I was an active sportsman, playing on the college basketball team and enjoying a variety of other sports like touch rugby, squash, running, and swimming.
But while I loved sports, for years I had a growth on the bottom of one of my feet that caused me pain and discomfort. Although I was advised to have the growth surgically removed, I felt it was an opportunity to rely on prayer instead.
I began my prayers by humbling myself so that I could more clearly hear God's direction. It was during exam time that I'd made this commitment to pray, and I'd already been studying the Bible and Science and Health to find new ways of understanding the source of my intelligence. I remember that one line from Science and Health particularly stood out to me. It reads, "The illuminations of Science give us a sense of the nothingness of error, and they show the spiritual inspiration of Love and Truth to be the only fit preparation for admission to the presence and power of the Most High" (p. 596). I set about listening devotedly to God as "fit preparation" for my exams.
