The path out of unemployment

From the July 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Downsizing. Right-sizing. Restructuring. These are business euphemisms that have become commonplace in news reports, and usually indicate job loss and dislocation for large groups of employees. When set against a backdrop of general economic decline, these reports can engender fear and even dread, leading to actions that exacerbate unfavorable economic trends.

I had to face such conditions during the last recession, about 12 years ago, when my position with a large company was eliminated as part of a major corporate downsizing. As sole financial support for my family, I felt responsible for our family's financial well-being and became afraid that losing my job would endanger it. I feared that, given the over-all economic climate, I would have difficulty finding a comparable job. I also felt a profound sense of loss, having invested many years of effort with that company.

Prayer is an important part of my life, and I chose to rely on it as I faced this problem. I also asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray along with me. Rather than starting each day with a perusal of the want ads, I started with prayer and listening for God's guidance. This gave me several insights that were quite helpful.
