Recently, our family got some tiny chicks. They had hatched out of the eggs only a few days before, so they were still just little balls of fluff. I guess our collie, Laddie, thought they needed a big brother, because right away, he wanted to take care of them. And the chicks trusted him. As they began to get their feathers, they would hop up on Laddie while he was lying down. Then they'd make a little nest on his back. Sometimes they would try to pull on one of his whiskers or peck at his toes so he'd have to tuck his paw under. Maybe it tickled his toes! But through it all Laddie would try to be very patient and loving.
The woman who started this magazine, Mary Baker Eddy, had animals around her when she was young, and she loved helping them and taking care of them. When she grew up, she even wrote about animals. I remember being really surprised about one thing she said. It seemed to me she was saying that if we value all of God's creation, including animals, then that will help us be better healers.
She wrote, "All of God's creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible." All God's creatures, harmless? Wow! Mrs. Eddy must have known how totally good God is to say that everything He made is good, too.
