Roadside robbery thwarted

From the August 2003 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day a couple who are my close friends gave me a ride home in their car. When we realized their car had a flat tire, we pulled over to the shoulder of the road. A boy came up to us and offered his help. After he had helped us change the tire, we rewarded the boy with some money. As soon as we gave him the money, though his friend showed up. It became clear that they planned to rob us.

They both got in the car. One of them attempted to reach me in the back seat, while the other tried to prevent my friend from starting the engine. They threatened us with knives, and demanded our money and watches, as well as the gold jewelry my friend's wife was wearing. But despite the circumstances, at that moment I was totally unafraid and felt very calm. I felt sure that if it was true that there is no room for evil in a good God, then there couldn't be a place for evil anywhere else, including the situation happening right in front of me.

When the boy next to me put his knife to my stomach, I was able to calmly ask him, "Why are you doing this to us?" And although I can't explain how or why, when I said this, he let go of me and drew back. Then he tumbled out of the car onto the street, without any pushing or forcing on my part. His friend, who was threatening my friend in the front seat, also tumbled out. At that moment, my friend slammed the door and started the car. We drove off and were free from the two robbers.
