I was waxing the car when I cut my hand on the bottom of the license plate. Although it was a long, deep cut, my first thought was not of fear but that God was with me and would care for me. I found the cut difficult to bandage, so I covered my hand as well as I could, and rode my bike over to a nearby Christian Science nursing facility. I'm grateful to say that I never felt afraid. Instead, I was aware of God's care and love for me; I knew those couldn't change.
By the time I reached the facility, no more than ten minutes after the incident had occurred, the profuse bleeding had stopped. Even when the Christian Science nurse cleaned and bandaged my hand there was no pain. And afterward, I was able to go back home and finish waxing the car.
The next morning, however, my hand was very painful, and it was difficult to move it normally. As I prayed, one of the ideas that helped me was the thought that God, or divine Mind, was doing all the knowing, and He doesn't know anything about pain. I thought about God being "the great Physician," (see Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, p. 151) and recalled this verse from Jeremiah: "For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord" (30:17). I was confident that I would be healed.
