A FRIEND RECALLS ...

From the November 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Dear Professor Medlin,

Thank you for your e-mail and also thanks for remembering our unforgettable trip during my sabbatical leave at the University of New Mexico. I had a great time traveling with you and listening to your words of wisdom. I have always told my colleagues about the trip and how great it was to keep you company. I have always had respect for you and what you stood for and have looked up to you as a role model.

I do recall the conversation we had about religion and spirit and the effects they have on those who believe in their power. We shared our understanding of spiritual powers and how they shape humankind in various forms. I talked about Australian indigenous people and you told me about Native Americans and their belief system. We also talked about Islam and discussed Christianity. I remember I talked about my ancestors and their Islamic practices and power of healing through prayer.

I recall I told you about one of my grandfathers who stayed on one foot all night and repeated "LaElaha Elalah ("There is no God but Allah") to save the life of one of his family members. In the morning he was given the news of recovery.

In course of this conversation, I remember you talked about Christians and how they believe in the power of prayer and how it has proven to be a remedy for many of the problems people are facing in life. I was not surprised by your recovery from the illness you were facing, through your belief in the power of prayer.

I read the text of your article you sent to me, and I am happy to have me there. It is an honour to have my name associated with your writings.
