STRIPPING OFF THE DISGUISE OF EVIL

From the November 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRIST JESUS TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES a succinct and powerful prayer, known universally as the Lord's Prayer. One line in this prayer says, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matt. 6:13). And in his ministry, Jesus proved over and over again that evil has no power, whether it appeared as sin, sickness, frightening storms, insufficient funds, inadequate transportation, devils, or even death.

Based on Christ Jesus' example and teachings, Christian Science shows that as real as limitations, fears, disease, death, and sin appear to be, they actually mask, or obscure, reality. Through understanding God's laws of good and applying them to any difficulty, anyone can take off the disguise of evil, see its unreality, and view instead God's child, the pure and perfect creation of the Almighty. This true view can heal. I found out how applicable these laws really are one morning when my five-year-old daughter, Heather, woke up very feverish and began to vomit, showing symptoms of the flu.

Praying about her condition, I came across this citation from Science and Health: "That which He creates is good, and He makes all that is made. Therefore the only reality of sin, sickness, or death is the awful fact that unrealities seem real to human, erring belief, until God strips off their disguise" (P. 472). My daughter and I talked about stripping off the disguise called sickness, knowing that it could have no power when we no longer attached it to her.
