BAGHDAD STORY

From the December 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

RESTING SAFELY IN OUR LIVING ROOMS or snuggling into a cozy winter evening by the fireside, most of us only read about the dangers and trauma of living day to day in cities rocked by violence, rocket attacks, or nightly gunfire. Yet for millions around the world, these events occur regularly, bringing fear and unease to the citizens of these troubled areas.

In this month's feature "Handling fear in war zones," three writers tell how they have learned through prayer to trust in God's divine laws of safety, universal beneficence, and love. Their prayers have shown them not only how to cope with the turmoil of their environments, but to rise above the atmosphere of tension and fear to experience true spiritual freedom and peace of mind.

And perhaps most importantly, they've learned to overcome the tendency to view others as enemies. Rather—and no matter how dire a situation they find themselves in—they have prayed to consistently view each individual as God's beloved child, regardless of nationality, religion, or ethnic allegiance. Their stories bring home to all of us the need to stay vigilant in how we view others—and how powerfully God's love protects and sustains us in every situation.
