CHRISTMAS—ITS RELEVANCE TODAY

From the December 2006 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A SMALL VILLAGE IN THE MIDDLE EAST some two thousand years ago. Something that would hardly be noticed under ordinary circumstances has just occurred. Yet in this instance, angels herald the event. The humblest of shepherds with their flocks in the field hear the good news. And dignitaries—wise men—will be traveling great distances to offer special gifts as tokens of their respect and reverence.

Actually, in this singular event, a divine promise is coming to pass. A great blessing is being bestowed on humanity. A simple woman named Mary gives birth to a son—Jesus. And the world is never again the same.

All of this, however, occurred in such a remote period of history. Does Christmas still have relevance today?
