I'M A CHURCH-GOING ENTHUSIAST. I just love being there. I do like talking with God one on one, yet I can't get enough of praying in the company of others. Although I enjoy singing when I'm at home, I feel much more joy and inspiration from singing hymns with a congregation. Not to mention the quiet and calm that come over me when I'm part of a church service. Church has an amazing way of dissolving the tempests in my teapot.
When my husband and I moved from Texas to Michigan last year, little did I know that one of the most important things I had brought with me was a letter from the clerk of our former branch Church of Christ, Scientist, saying that I was a member in good standing—meaning I was ready to unite with my new church family in Michigan.
When one moves, sometimes it's hard to readjust instantly. I felt that my immediate involvement in church would be the way to do this, so I decided not to delay. I suppose this action signaled, at least in part, my way of saying to these new church friends, "I have moved here mentally and physically. I want to be part of what you are doing, and I want to help you do it." The result: immediate friendship and a welcome feeling into my new community.
