The Bible and Science and Health go together like two sides of a coin. Mary Baker Eddy ordained these two unique books pastor over The Mother Church. Manual of The Mother Church, p. 58. Like other Christian Scientists, full-time practitioner and teacher of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, turns continually to this pastor for inspiration, guidance, peace, rescue, and healing of every kind of trouble. Not just for him—but also for others who ask him for Christian Science treatment.
John Tyler wrote his doctoral thesis for Princeton University on the post-World War II building of the European Union. Fluent in French, Mr. Tyler studied diplomacy at Science Po—the Institute for Political Studies in Paris—in preparation to enter the US Foreign Service. Today Tyler's French connection has grown stronger—he lectures on Christian Science in French, and other languages, as a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship.
Mr. Tyler, who found Christian Science in his mid-teens, says that his concern with social and political issues led him "to try to solve the problems of the world" in different ways: by securing rights and wages for sweatshop workers as a union organizer; defusing cold war issues in Europe by working as assistant director of an international relations institute in Italy; trying to understand and teach how to construct political institutions that promote fairness and freedom without losing a sense of community; founding a university living unit that furthers interracial understanding and healing.
