EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO I was diagnosed with vaginal cancer. The gynecologist who had examined me told me I would need to have surgery. I went to my usual homeopathic doctor, who prescribed medication, which I took. My mother-in-law had passed away from this disease, and I was very fearful. I had the same symptoms she'd had, and I was experiencing pain in different parts of my body.
When I talked to my sister to tell her what had happened, she told me, "Hang on to life." She was a Christian Scientist. She gave me the address of a Church of Christ, Scientist, and suggested I speak to a Christian Science practitioner there and ask her to help me through prayer. I went to church and was introduced to a very lovely woman who was a practitioner. After hearing what was happening with me, she spoke very kindly to me and took me to the Christian Science Reading Room, where she gave me the Bible and Science and Health. She told me that I would be healed by reading these two books. But I didn't believe it and wondered, "How can I be healed just by reading these books?"
I asked the practitioner to pray for me, and she did. I had decided to stop taking the medication and rely completely on the spiritual treatment given by the practitioner—and on my own prayers. Sometimes I felt ill and had no desire to read, so I would ask my husband and my daughter to read to me the pages the practitioner had recommended that I study. Little by little, I began to learn that matter is not intelligent and does not become ill, and that because I was a child of God, illness was not part of me. My faith grew stronger and stronger.
One day my son took me back to the homeopathic doctor to relieve his mind of worry about my condition. On the way there I told him that I was very grateful for what he was doing, but that I was going to be healed through prayer alone. He was very surprised. Then I explained to him that I was having Christian Science treatment and that I was feeling happy and very well physically as a result of reading the Bible and Science and Health. I wasn't in any pain. The doctor gave me more medication, but I didn't take it. I continued holding on to the truth that I was spiritual and not material. In Science and Health the explanation of man (a generic term meaning man and woman) says this: "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas ..." (p. 475).
I continued attending church and studying this book along with the Bible. Psalm 23 gave me a lot of encouragement, especially the part that says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me" (verse 4).
Weeks later I was given another ultrasound, and the doctors told me I was getting better. The practitioner and I continued praying, until one day the doctors told me that they had a free bed in the hospital and that they were going to operate. But first they said they would do some tests. I insisted that I was well and that I didn't have any disease. Then they gave me a very thorough examination and found absolutely nothing. They didn't understand what had happened and even formed a committee of five doctors who confirmed that there was no trace of the disease—seven months after the doctors' initial diagnosis. I was completely well.
This healing has made me feel very secure in God. It showed me that we really are His children and that He created us healthy and complete. I understand now that our Father-Mother God does not send us disease.
I pray a lot to the Father, not for myself alone but for everybody, because this healing was wonderful, and I want to share it with others.
I am very grateful to God for this healing, and for my sister's guidance, because otherwise I wouldn't have found out about Christian Science.
