CONNECTION 3 20-SOMETHING

A RADICAL PATH

From the March 2007 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During my freshman year of college, I decided to try a mixed drink and see what all the fuss was about. I don't really know what made me want to start drinking and partying with my friends. I guess it looked like they were having so much more fun than I'd been having. I became tired of being the "good girl" and following "the rules" of Christian Science. Pretty soon, I started to drink regularly. It felt wild and rebellious. Drinking also became a release from the heavy coursework and the academic strain of university life.

The biggest factor in deciding that I didn't want to drink anymore had to do with prayer.

Yet that same year, I felt like I'd made Christian Science my own. I participated in the Christian Science Organization on campus, attended Wednesday evening services regularly, and loved going to Sunday School at a local branch church. Christian Science was a tangible part of my life.
