CONNECTIONS 20-SOMETHING

SPIRITUAL GPS

Facing roadblocks to a long-treasured career goal, a young woman finds the humility to change course.

From the December 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God is with us every moment, guiding our every move, our career, even when it feels as though we're taking those steps alone.

THE SUMMER OF 2004 I strutted around Washington, DC, like a queen. In actuality, I was an intern in a government agency, but I felt like I was sitting on top of the world. I had just graduated from college with a degree in journalism and had landed a prestigious internship through my mentor. Everything was going according to plan.

After I completed my internship, things didn't proceed as swiftly and sweetly as I had expected. I searched, interviewed, and networked, but couldn't find a job I liked or felt would move me forward in my chosen career path.
