A few years back, I began to experience intermittent stomach trouble. Gradually the situation became more acute until one day my digestive system stopped working altogether, and I was unable to eat, drink, or eliminate.
While I couldn't work or continue any of my normal activities, my desire was to rely exclusively on prayer for healing. Over the next several days, I earnestly studied the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy and prayed to understand the spiritual truths that would enable me to regain my freedom. The Bible story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who refused to concede to the material worship demanded by King Nebuchadnezzar (see Dan., chapter 3), bolstered my own resolve as I resisted the temptation to doubt that prayer alone was adequate to heal me.
I devoted myself to gaining a clearer understanding of the Christ—the divine nature that each of us expresses. I prayed deeply about the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, and the Gospel accounts of Jesus' healings. I also read many encouraging articles in the Christian Science magazines that emphasized the unbroken relationship each one of us has to our divine Parent.
