I first learned about Christian Science after my youngest child, Maurice, was diagnosed with an abnormal condition. When the boy was eight months old, his pediatrician brought to my attention that his skull was two centimeters larger than normal. Alarmed by the news, I called one of my brothers, a doctor, and asked him for advice about where to take my son for further testing. He recommended a colleague who he said had the most advanced equipment to test such abnormalities. I took my son to him, and an ultrasound scan indicated that my son had hydrocephalus (water on the brain).
The doctor assured me that the condition had been detected in time and that they could correct it through surgery, thus preventing pressure to the brain that could cause damage.
The doctors felt that since the child was only eight months old, and his skull was only slightly enlarged, there probably hadn't been any damage to the brain. However, I was told that if he had specific symptoms, I should bring him back to the doctor immediately. No medication was prescribed or given to Maurice because the medical verdict was that only surgery would relieve the condition.
