DEEP THINK

SPIRALING UP

The author tells how he overcame economic despair.

From the December 2008 issue of The Christian Science Journal

EVERY DAY WE FACE VIVID IMAGES, NEWS ITEMS, and sometimes personal challenges stemming from the notion that we live in a world plagued by scarcity, diminished opportunity, and downward economic spirals. And yet in Genesis, the Scriptures pronounce man (including male and female) as made in the image and likeness of God. Then wouldn't it follow that poverty, or impoverishment of life in any form, is contrary to man's natural and normal state of being? Only a poor God could create an impoverished likeness.

For anyone seeking a lasting solution to financial and broader economic problems, a fresh, spiritual perspective on the nature of God and of His image and likeness can open a path out of limitation in any form.

Throughout the Old and New Testaments, the Bible records the constancy of a caring, Father-Mother God who meets people's needs even in the most dire circumstances. One of the overarching narratives of the Scriptures is that when individuals are willing to turn toward their divine Father and away from materialistic pursuits, their lives become more secure and richer in blessings.
