Every child who enters a Christian Science Sunday School, even if it is only for one class, will begin to discover the simplicity of the healing Christ-principle. These children learn that there is never a situation, a condition, or a place where God's love and power are not present to protect and guide them. They learn that even if they make mistakes and suffer from their mistakes, they can never be separated from the redeeming, transforming power of the Christ-love. And these lessons can never be lost or forgotten. Sunday School awakens thought to the Christ-message, which is eternally revealing to consciousness each one's unbreakable relation to God, divine Love. And this teaching continues in the thought of students, giving them spiritual insight and courage wherever they go.
Sunday School was crucial to my early formation as a Christian Science healer. One of the most powerful examples I remember of the nurturing effect of Sunday School happened when I was ten years old and attended Girl Scout camp. One day, when I accidentally opened a fallen bees' nest, hundreds of bees flew out and stung me. Instantly, I became still and listened for God's healing message as I had been taught to do in Sunday School. Two things I had learned came to me clearly: 1. Everything God made is very good—the bees and me—so neither of us could hurt the other; 2. "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power" (Science and Health, p. 473).
Within seconds, the bees flew away and the pain I had been feeling vanished. However, the campers, counselor, and camp nurse were concerned. My face had swollen, and they said I had a high fever. But I was absolutely at peace. I knew my Father-Mother God was always caring for me and that I could never be separated from all-powerful Love. The next morning, there was no trace of any effects of the bee stings, and I was back playing again completely free.
