When My Wife And I Married, we alternated each Sunday in attending my church and the Christian Science church where my wife was a member. Gradually I began to understand the deeper spiritual meanings of the Bible passages I heard read at my wife's church.
With the birth of each of our three children, I also saw evidence of the power of my wife's prayers. As the boys grew, they didn't experience the childhood diseases that seemed so common to the other children in our neighborhood. Over several years, I began to accept and understand Christian Science.
My first real demonstration of the power of prayer to heal occurred after I accepted an interview for a flight officer position with a major commercial airline. I had a lifelong dream of becoming an airline pilot and had spent substantial effort and money to obtain the education and flight experience necessary to become one. However, my vision had previously tested at 20/100, too far off from the 20/40 required to pass the vision test. Science and Health states, "Truth casts out all evils and materialistic methods with the actual spiritual law,—the law which gives sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, voice to the dumb, feet to the lame" (p. 183). Along with the prayerful support of my wife, I knew that the diagnostic results of measuring my visual acuity could be overturned by the spiritual law that I have perfect spiritual acuity. I passed the sight exam with the required 20/40 and spent 29 years as a pilot for a major airline.
