I Love That We Can heal by applying the same principles Jesus taught a few thousand years ago. Five years ago, when I was seventeen, I had an opportunity to demonstrate this. That January I got my monthly period—and it didn't stop. Some days the flow was lighter than others, but the symptoms were alarming to me at times.
When this difficulty began I was living with my dad, and I told him that I wanted to rely on Christian Science for healing. I was confident that Christian Science works, and that it's the only reliable healing method. Dad is also a student of Christian Science, and he agreed to support my decision to rely solely on prayer, but told me many times that he wanted to be assured of my progress. Daily, he prayed with me during the nine months this condition lasted and checked in with me to see how I was doing.
At various times I called different Christian Science practitioners for Christian Science treatment, and each one helped me progress. Usually, I felt well enough to go to school, and I often went to track practices, though I didn't fully participate in the workouts. One day at practice, I was walking around the track with one of my Christian Science friends. I was feeling pretty discouraged. As I complained, she quietly listened for a while, and then suddenly turned to me and said, "Your 'birthright is dominion, not subjection,'" quoting Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health, p. 518). I began to see that God gave me complete dominion over suffering and frustration. In that moment, I let go of those limiting, "Oh poor me" thoughts.
