YOUR QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Following the example set by the question-and-answer columns in the early Journals, when Mary Baker Eddy was Editor, this column will respond to general queries from Journal readers—such as the one above—with responses from Journal readers. You'll find information at the end of the column about how to submit questions.

YOUR QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

From the February 2009 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A family member who has had many healings through Christian Science in the past didn't respond recently to specific Christian Science treatment for a serious condition. Why is that?

A1 When we're struggling with a question so dear to our hearts, it may help to remember Joseph's reply to Pharaoh's desperate plea for help in interpreting a dream that was troubling him severely. Rather than give his opinion of the meaning of the dream, Joseph placed the issue squarely in God's hands. Joseph said, "It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace" (Gen. 41:16). The same is true for you. God will give you the peace you seek.

You can certainly cherish the many healings your relative did have through Christian Science treatment. What brought about those healings? Wasn't it his or her application of divine law? The laws of God are unerring, unchanging, knowable, and demonstrable. Each Christian Science treatment given on that basis has an effect, though sometimes fear (ours or others'), or discouragement, may keep an individual from recognizing how much progress they've made.
