TEN YEARS AGO, I went through a very dark time. Within a period of six months I lost my father and a friend I loved as a son. My friend represented a light in my life, and my father had been a source of encouragement, strength, and guidance.
My grief was such that I developed symptoms that were medically diagnosed as depression. I stopped working and was unable even to bathe or do housework on my own. Each day the dosage of my medication increased. The doctors predicted that I would need to be medicated for as long as I lived.
One day, however, I found in a drawer an issue of The Herald of Christian Science (Portuguese edition), which a friend had given me two years before. I began to read the magazine and became interested in the concepts it presented. The testimonies of healing impressed me.
