The employment within

From the January 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few months ago, my wife and I had lunch at a coffee house. It was very quiet. About a dozen people were at different tables around the room, most pecking away at their laptops. We surmised that perhaps some of them might be scanning the Web in search of employment openings.

This led me to wonder, Is there any place in the world where we might find guaranteed full employment? I had to conclude, no, not in this world—but it can be found in the kingdom of God. I reasoned that in His kingdom, God employs all His children in fulfilling and gainful activity, and amply rewards them out of His storehouse of infinite supply.

Didn’t Christ Jesus tell us where to find this kingdom? He said, “The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:20, 21). It was through this understanding of the kingdom within and its ever-flowing affluence that Jesus found the “daily bread” that sustained him and his disciples.
