Frequently, testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals begin with a confession that the testifier realized it was time for him or her to express gratitude in print for Christian Science. This testimony is my expression of gratitude to God for the Comforter, Christian Science, which Christ Jesus said God would send, to bring forever to all mankind a remembrance of the teachings and healings accomplished by him.
I am grateful for having been born and raised by loving parents who were devout students of this Science. As I reflect on my life journey, I am impressed how each phase of the journey prepared me for the next, and higher, phase. There have been healings of hay fever, back pain, frequent nosebleeds, fainting spells, and what appeared to me to be a heart condition.
Some years ago, during the very early hours of the morning, I was awakened by a severe pain in my chest and shortness of breath. I arose from bed and went into our den to pray for myself. Fear tried to dominate my thought, and after some time, I felt as if I was dying. My wife appeared and comforted me. As time passed, pertinent quotations from the Bible and Science and Health came to both my wife and me, which we repeated aloud, realizing their truth and applying it to my need. As we read together, the fear lessened and was replaced by an increasing sense of peace and assurance of healing. This went on for several hours, and I felt the symptoms fading. As dawn approached I felt able to return to bed, and we slept without further interruption until we arose for a new day of unfolding good.
