At home in the arms of divine Love

From the October 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The day after I graduated from college in the Midwest, I went on a road trip to California with college friends. The sporty-looking car was very little! Every inch of the trunk and the backseat was packed, leaving only a little room on the backseat for one person. We rotated seats during the trip. On this particular day, I was the one sitting in the tiny space in the backseat of the car. It reminded me of a small closet.

We had previously planned our accommodations, but one day we were ahead of schedule and needed to find a place to stay for that night. Although there was some talk about just stopping and taking what we could find, I quietly felt that this was not our answer. I knew my friends were listening and praying, too, and that we would find a right solution for the present need. As I turned to God to feel His tender embrace, I just wanted to understand His eternal care for me and for all of us.

The Bible gives us these comforting words: “When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:6). There in my cozy backseat “closet,” I felt reassured that I could quietly and humbly listen to God.
