Singing new songs

A prolific and steady stream of new inspirational music by the Newsong Group of England has flooded the Christian Science marketplace (and beyond) in recent years. Recently the Journal’ s Roger Gordon “chatted” via e-mail with Newsong Group musicians Tamsin Bland, Andrew Brewis, and Airlie Scott about their endeavors.

From the October 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Tamsin: We have known each other since school days together. Although we were in different years at school, we were all Christian Scientists and musicians, and we often played music together.

After a brief period as a landscape architect, Andrew began a career as a musician, playing the piano and singing. He began to develop his songwriting skills and was encouraged to start writing inspirational music. In 2005 he was invited to Focus, a two-week Christian Science youth camp held in England every four years, to share his new hymns. It seemed natural for Airlie and myself to join him to help teach these new songs to the youngsters there. They loved it—and suggested that we record this music so that it could be shared with others. That’s where the Newsong Group started.

Andrew: The kids loved what I had written and were clamoring for more, so I wrote more hymns and got together with Airlie and Tamsin, two old school chums. All three of us worked so well together. Tamsin is our wonderful flutist, and Airlie has a special quality to her voice and is able to convey the deep spirituality of the lyrics she sings.
