Letters

From the November 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was startled to read the August Journal’s interview with Bettie B. Thompson regarding Christian Science churches and segregation of the black community. Does this kind of thought still go on? I wondered how that could be in a religion whose teachings are so full of the spirit of divine Love that includes and embraces all. How could Christian Scientists be noninclusive to some members of the human race?

After my thought stopped reeling from this news, I got down to business. As Mrs. Thompson pointed out as important to do, I made sure my thought was open to welcome those who perhaps are not always included enough in our church community. I mentally and happily checked to see and know that I do welcome and include all my brothers and sisters of all nations and races into my church and my religion. It was a quick and simple prayer.

Two days later as I pulled into our church parking lot for Sunday service, I saw an African American family, whom I had never seen before, getting out of their car to attend the service.
