Spiritual Short

Fighting crime with church

From the November 2013 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the 1970s I was head of the Security/Host Division at The Mother Church.  The crime rate in Boston was very high, and this situation affected even the Church Plaza.

I went to a Christian Science practitioner for help about this. She responded: “It is Church that influences the community. It is not the other way around. It is Truth that influences man. It is not the other way around. Error, evil, does not influence Truth.”

She spoke of the spiritual idea Church, “the structure of Truth and Love,” as a tangible influence on society (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583). The community cannot be moved off the foundation of the Christ, Principle. She made me promise to ponder those ideas.
