There was a time when I struggled to study the weekly Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly. I would “do the Lesson” because I felt it was my duty, but it became rather mundane and boring. Sometimes I skimmed over the passages or listened to the audio version while doing other activities, without giving it my full attention. I could say I had “done the Lesson,” but it brought little inspiration, joy, or healing.
I was working in a high school and was responsible for handling behavior issues among the students. This often required making difficult decisions that could impact a student’s future. Yearning for spiritual Truth one day, I prayed and listened for what God had to say before I read the Bible Lesson. Doing this from that day on, I found healing truths in the Lesson that I could apply to whatever situation I was in, guiding me in making decisions that proved to be positive for the students and the school.
My prayers are new and fresh each day now—and so is reading the Lesson. Recently, my prayers began with acknowledging the allness, the omnipotence and omnipresence, of God. God is divine Mind, and man is the spiritual idea of God. As an idea of Mind, I am receptive to thoughts from God. In the reality of Mind as All, there is nothing to interfere with the thoughts flowing to me from God.
