The swimming pool ball, the mirror image, and the shadow

From the July 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Every bit of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy has infinite depths of inspiration and practical application, but it is always a delight to me when something that I have understood and loved at one level takes on fresh meaning, and powerful inspiration is breathed into my healing work.

Countless spiritual lessons can be learned from how we interpret the world around us. For instance, are we taking things at face value, or are we diving deeper to understand divine intelligence, the Mind that is God? Science and Health explains: “The divine Principle of the universe must interpret the universe. God is the divine Principle of all that represents Him and of all that really exists. Christian Science, as demonstrated by Jesus, alone reveals the natural, divine Principle of Science” (p. 272).

Scientifically translating mortal mind—the supposed mentality that appears to operate separately from and in opposition to God—leads us to more clearly perceive immortal Mind’s omniscient self-knowing. But this spiritual understanding happens by degrees.
