Recovery after fall down stairs

From the July 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During a busy Christmas season several years ago, I fell and slid down the stairs, landing on the hard tile floor with my knee bearing the force of the fall. Immediately there came a command as if it had been spoken: “Rise up and walk.”

Since I serve as First Reader for a Christian Science society in my town, these words from the Bible were very familiar to me. I obeyed, using the stair railing to pull myself up and supported by a flow of inspired ideas as to how to meet the client who had just come to my front door to pick up artwork she had purchased. I was able to lead her into another room, though moving with difficulty and balancing on the uninjured leg.

A statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that has helped me with other challenges came to thought: “Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony” (p. 495).
