The pains of sense and the Ten Commandments

From the July 2025 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After decades of growing resistance to the Ten Commandments, which Moses received from God millennia ago, people are beginning to reconsider their purpose and value. I have come to gain a deep respect for these commandments—not as a harsh control mechanism but rather as a precious gift from a loving Father-Mother God.

Think of it this way: Would a loving and caring parent say to her six-year-old, “I want you to be free to do and have whatever you want. So you can play in the street, stay up all night flipping TV channels, eat as much candy as you want, and go off with anyone who is nice to you”? Certainly not, because little children do not yet have the maturity and wisdom to discern between what is good and bad, safe and dangerous. That’s what parents are for!

The corporeal senses testify to the dualism of mind and matter, thus opposing the First Commandment.
